Why Should You Join a Real Estate Team?

Should you be a solo real estate agent or join a real estate team? As someone who has done both, I know that there are many benefits to joining a real estate team.

So, you want to be a real estate agent. Should you join a real estate team or be a solo agent? I have done both and I personally recommend joining a team.

I first got my real estate license in 2002 and was a solo agent for eight years before I joined a team. During my time as a solo agent, I really learned a lot about the industry and every detail of the real estate transaction. In order to be successful, I had to really hustle and learn a lot on my own.

The difference between being on a team and being a solo agent boils down to one keyword: leverage.

As a solo agent, if you are someone who is dynamic, works really hard to learn the industry, and able to share depth and knowledge with your client base, you can make a decent income. You can make $150,000 a year as a solo agent. The problem is that you reach a point where you can’t do any more. After all, there is only so much you can do and there is only so much time in a day.

Basically, you reach a point where you can only break through by adding leverage in your life. There are really two paths for an agent to choose from (solo or team) and it all boils down to a matter of perspective.

Teams allow you to be successful while doing what you do best.

Ask yourself what you value. Many people who want to be self-employed choose to do so because they want freedom and they want money. Real estate gives you that opportunity. You are free to use your time, but solo agents get to a point where they need leverage or they will get stuck in the hamster wheel of production. If you choose to be a solo agent, you can run that model as long as you want and you can make a high income if you’re a diligent, hard worker.

What tends to happen is there is no accountability around you. If you’re in a great office with a certain branch or company, the leadership in that organization will have a tremendous impact on your career.

If you look at the team model, this is where people in real estate come to be successful. This is a place where successful conversations happen every day. We talk about accountability, mastery, and other high-level concepts. People come here because they want to grow, learn, exchange ideas, and become the best in the world at what they do.

It’s important to earn income to support your perfect life, but you need a steady income that will increase each year. When I was a solo agent, my income was up and down. I didn’t master lead generation because I didn’t have a team around me for support.

Being on a team lets you focus on your highest and best use. Most agents want to be around people. They want to be out and about, showing homes and connecting with others. They don’t want to get stuck in the minutiae of paperwork.

It can be incredibly draining to be stuck in a job that you don’t love. Being in a team environment allows you to be successful, earn a high income, and do what you love to do.
